PRR Tugboat Harrisburg
The Harrisburg’s twin-cylinder vertical steam engine is alcohol- powered. It has an individually-wood- planked deck, pilot house and cabin; navigation, tow, pilot house, and cabin lights; complete internal pilot house detail; opening doors and windows; and real hemp bow and side fenders on a fibreglass-reinforced resin hull. The bulkheads and fittings are brass, and in addition to the cradle and electrified display case, there is a removable keel for stability during on-the-water operation.
The Harrisburg’s accompanying 100-foot carfloat is also designed for on-the-water operation.
It can accommodate up to four Gauge 1 freight cars on two tracks with a wood-planked loading dock between them. Like the tug, it has a fibreglass-reinforced resin hull and brass superstructure with all of the details, plus a canvas loading dock roof, hand-laid rails, removable wheel chocks, and an optional display case of its own.
The Harrisburg, with its tall stack and jaunty lines, was not only our first ship model—it was, we feel, the finest limited-edition functioning ship model of its time.
